Kaiwalagal Funeral Services is based on Thursday Island and provides funeral services to all residents of Kaiwalagal Torres Strait. Our services are also available to residents in the Northern Peninsula area (NPA).
We are contracted by the Coroners Court of Queensland and work closely with the Queensland Police Service, Queensland Health, the Queensland Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, and transport providers.
We recognise that our families and community are spread throughout Australia and that many interstate and international travellers pass through Kaiwalagal Torres Strait.
If your loved one passes away outside Kaiwalagal Torres Strait or the Northern Peninsula Area and wishes to return home, we will work closely with other funeral directors and transport operators to co-ordinate the safe and timely transfer of your loved one for burial at home. This includes repatriation of your loved one if they were transferred by Queensland Health to the mainland for treatment.
If your loved one passes away in Kaiwalagal Torres Strait or the Northern Peninsula Area and needs to be transferred home to a mainland or international destination, we will work closely with the funeral directors and transport operators needed for return and will escort your loved one to the nearest airport for onward travel.
